THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS (2002)Info about the second of the franchise, The Chamber of Secrets, is shaping up all over the internet. There have even been stills from the film appearing on some webpages. whos in itThe principals return, as do most of the faculty members but Zoë Wanamaker, sadly, does not. After making The Philosopher's Stone, she dissed Warner Bros. for paying peanuts to the actors, considering how much the film was expected to make. Consequently she signed up only for one film although she knew other less secure actors who gratefully signed for three. The big new name is Kenneth Branagh who joins as Professor Gilderoy Lockhart. Miserable Myrtle, the teenage ghost is played by 35-year-old Shirley Henderson. more actors! The wicked Tom Riddle (the young Lord Voldemort) is played by Christian Coulson, a largely unknown 23-year-old actor. Also joining the magic circle: Jason Isaacs plays Lucius Malfoy, comedian Mark Williams plays Ron's father, Arthur Weasley and Miriam Margolyes drops into the greenhouse as Herbology teacher, Professor Sprout. how far have they got?The film is again being filmed at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire and locations around the UK. Warner Bros. has released the first official still. factus obscurisIn the BBCi chatrooms I spoke to someone whose father sold the film-makers one of the props for The Chamber of Secrets. His father was a car dealer and the prop was a door handle for the magical blue Ford Anglia. It was such an obscure claim so I believed him. how do dobby?I cannot be the only one wondering how they are going to realise Dobby, the house elf. I always imagined him looking not a little like a pint-sized Grinch, but less green, more simpering and less wicked-looking. Going hand in hand with this, the eyes, which are described as round like tennis balls. industrial spells and magicYou might remember I said elsewhere that the effects in The Philosopher's Stone looked a bit dodgy at times. Well, turns out that for The Chamber of Secrets, the special effects task has been handed to another company - George Lucas's Industrial Light and Magic. Previously the work was done by Sony Pictures Imageworks. The official reason is that the Sony house was too busy on Spiderman and Stuart Little 2, but maybe the filmmakers thought ILM could do better than the centaur and Voldemort of film one?
